2008 EDITION OF PATIENT RESOURCE CANCER GUIDE
EXPANDS CONTENT, ADDS IN-DEPTH INFORMATION
“Go To” Info Source is Leading National Cancer Directory
in First Year of Publication

KANSAS CITY - Expansion plans are already underway for the 2008 Patient Resource cancer guide, according to company officials. Scoring top marks since it debuted in April of this year, the 128 page guide is giving newly-diagnosed cancer patients an unprecedented helping hand in managing their disease.

Patient Resource Founder and long-time medical publisher Linette Atwood says the 2008 guide will go beyond the content covered in the 2007 edition. It’s her mission, she says, to assist millions of newly diagnosed cancer patients across the country to explore available treatment options, advocate for better care, connect with clinical trials and rally for survival.

“Patient Resource began because of my own personal cancer journey, and has now transitioned into the ‘go to’ source as a national consumer cancer guide,” says Atwood, a breast cancer survivor who lost three family members to the disease.

The 2008 Patient Resource cancer guide will again be available free of charge in more than 7,000 cancer clinics and doctor’s offices around the country. It will feature all the information included in the 2007 guide – from cancer specialist and facility listings to stories of survival, how to find clinical trials, the importance of seeking a second medical opinion and more. Literally everything, Atwood says, that a newly diagnosed cancer patient needs to know about navigating their treatment plan in an easy to use directory format.

The cancer community itself – oncologists, researchers, clinicians and nursing staff – have also embraced Patient Resource as a highly valuable, credible patient education tool. With internationally recognized oncologist Charles M. Balch, M.D. as medical editor of the publication, leading professional associations such as the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and medical facilities such as Johns Hopkins and M.D. Anderson have all taken an active and supportive role in Patient Resource’s success.

In addition, the 2008 Patient Resource guide will include:

  • Special sections on clinical trials, drug therapies, pediatric cancer, radiation therapy, blood and marrow transplants
  • Follow-up screening
  • Questions to ask your pharmacist
  • The importance of keeping good records and implementing double-check systems
  • Understanding genetic testing for cancer
  • Cancer vaccines
  • New ways of treating cancer
  • Advantages/disadvantages of being treated out-of-town versus staying close to home
  • Keeping family and friends aware of your progress
  • Cancer prevention for family and friends
  • Understanding emotional pain
  • Cancer pain
  • Co-pay assistance foundations
  • Survivor stories from patients who enrolled in clinical trials
  • Survivor stories from oncologists who have experienced cancer
  • Content from ASCO’s People Living With Cancer Web site

“Patient Resource is an informational bridge to hope and survival,” says Atwood. “Now, thanks to an overwhelmingly positive response to the debut guide, we will dig deeper and provide even more meaningful content for 2008.”

The 2008 edition will be available in April and can also be ordered at www.patientresource.net and at www.amazon.com.
