500,000 NEW CANCER GUIDES NOW OFF THE
PRESSES!
Comprehensive Resource Tool Promises to Change the Way Patients Manage
Cancer
KANSAS
CITY
- This week, in
over 6,000 cancer clinics and medical offices in America, a new era in patient
advocacy will arrive. Packaged in standard issue cardboard boxes, over half
a million new resources will make their way across the country in the fight
against cancer.
Welcome to a new chapter in cancer patient
advocacy, says Linette Atwood, founder of this national advocacy movement
and publisher of the newly released comprehensive cancer guide called
Patient Resource .
Because once opened, the contents of these
unassuming brown boxes may well change the way cancer patients manage their
disease, heralding a new era in patient advocacy among Baby Boomers who are
fighting cancer armed with information.
The new guide, Patient Resource: A Cancer Treatment and Facilities Guide For
Patients and Their Families, is available at no cost to patients
at their local oncology office or cancer clinic beginning this week.
Patient Resource Medical Editor Charles
Balch, M.D., says the significant shift toward increased self advocacy in
healthcare has Americans doing more research, seeking second and third
opinions, and managing their cancer treatment far beyond doctor's orders.
"This is a new way of thinking. When
given a diagnosis of cancer, Americans today are challenging protocol and
become proactive," says Balch. "Today's cancer patients are
looking for answers and opportunities to chart their own course for
treatment and survival."
Patient Resource is a comprehensive
reference of opportunites, says Balch. While the annual publication
provides a unique blend of survivor stories, it also presents extensive
lists and contact information for cancer specialists, treatment, clinics,
terminology and clinical trials. It even provides patients with tips for
navigating the insurance maze and explains the importance of second and
third opinions.
The entire Patient Resource directory
approaches a cancer diagnosis from an insider's view. That was by design --
and through experience -- as the guide's founder and publisher Linette
Atwood has lived with her own cancer story. Not only is she a breast cancer
survivor, but she learned the hard way that patient resources are both
scarce and difficult to find when battling cancer. Atwood lost her husband,
father and sister to the disease. She believes more information early in
her husband's diagnosis may have helped to extend his life or even provide
him with a cure.
"Once we were given that diagnosis,
we didn't know where to turn," says Atwood. "If we had this type
of directory from the start, we wouldn't have wasted precious time looking
for answers. What every cancer patient needs to know is in these 128
pages."
Patient Resource is considered to be the
only single-source, user-friendly comprehensive treatment guide available
to those in need. In addition to physician's office, individuals can learn
more about Patient Resource by logging onto www.patientresource.net.
